LABORATORY

The 1970s and 1980s were a period of major investment and modernisation at Ulcinj Salina. Alongside the traditional production of sea salt, new processing technologies and products were developed, demonstrating the broader potential of this natural resource.

During this period, a new laboratory was also built, a space where production processes were monitored daily, samples of seawater and salt were analysed, salinity was measured, and product quality was controlled.

The results of laboratory analyses helped water-management workers and production teams manage the movement of water through the salt pans and determine the right time for the salt harvest.

The laboratory was not only a place for quality control, but also a space for research and development. New products were developed here, including SolMex, a scented bath salt that demonstrated that Ulcinj salt could have a much broader value beyond its use in food and industry.

For decades, laboratory technicians and experts safeguarded the quality of Ulcinj salt through their knowledge, measurements and experience. Their work was often invisible, yet it was an essential part of the larger system connecting nature, technology and people.

Today, the laboratory represents a valuable part of the industrial heritage of Ulcinj Salina, a place that preserves the story of a time when the sea, science and human knowledge came together in every crystal of salt.
